My name is Roxanne Kiesling and I am a Fifth Third River Bank Run Road Warrior for 2017. The opportunity to grow as runner and to be encouraged and motivated by others who are on the same exciting journey to complete a 5K, 10K or 25K is why I am looking forward to being a Road Warrior. This will be my first 25K and the first time I’ve participated in the Fifth Third River Bank Run.
My running journey began in 2011 when I trained for my first Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Half Marathon. Up until this time I had enjoyed running 1-3 miles a week but knew I needed some accountability and motivation to complete anything more than a 10K. During this time, my dear friend’s cousin had lost her battle with Rhabdomyosarcoma at the young age of 11. I had the motivation, but now I needed the accountability, so I signed up to be a part of the American Cancer Society DetermiNation program. I was now part of a group of individuals who would hold each other accountable for the training necessary to finish the race AND I was able to raise money for an organization that fights every day to find a cure for cancer.
Running for me has always been therapeutic. It has never been about losing weight or getting in shape as it has been for relieving stress, anxiety and clearing my mind. Being a Road Warrior also means that I get to represent one of the official charity partners for the Fifth Third River Bank Run. I’ve chosen the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids, not only do I get to work for this great organization, but I get to raise funds for an organization whose mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
